9:40pm: [glances up from the keyboard as the Victorian begins to pull away from the City, heading out into the ocean]

... [small smile, reaches for his coat, pulling it on] Never know where the tides bring us next.

[turns back to his piano, playing softly as the ship departs]

[observing the peace and silence of the ship he's standing on, shoulders hunched to look out over the side at the City]

...Terrible when good friends leave. But don't be upset when it's over. Smile because it happened.

Well.

Anyone out there fancy a chat? I promise I can be quite a good listener.

...I didn't even know your name.

I should have gone after you.

To the members of the Obsessive Compulsive Piano Players Anonymous Club, I offer the Virginian as a meeting location. I've two pianos, one in very good condition aside from once smashing it into a wall of plate glass windows, and am sure together we can have a rather good time.

If no one minds, I'd also like to involve anyone from the Music Club who enjoys listening or who can play an instrument to show. Perhaps we may have enough people for a proper orchestra.

Hmn..It seems I am now receiving notices about docking fees for my ship. This is troubling, but perhaps it goes hand in hand with the introduction of money falling from the skies.

Well then..Is there anyone out there in need of piano lessons? Chiyo, I hope we can still consider cooking lessons for piano lessons a fair trade, but if not, I can start paying you with the coins that fell to the deck earlier on.

As a side note, is there anyone I can hire for a delivery or catering service? The food I have here is starting to run low, I may need someone's help in running from my ship to a store for some groceries.

[holds in his hand a piece of wrapped candy, looking curiously up at the sky]

Well, this is certainly a new oddity. [unwraps the candy and pops it into his mouth] Thank goodness, I was getting rather hungry. Not much fish to catch and I'll be damned if I can ever learn how to properly cook for myself. Though how long one man can survive on sweets and sandwiches has yet to be determined.

I don't suppose, if given the choice, any man -would- prefer to do so, but as if yet there seems to be no other alternative. [small smile]

I'd say this special occasion is deserving of a little Mozart.

[pale and mumbling] Be careful what you wish for, I suppose...I oughtn't have complained about being alone most of the time on the ship. I woke up, and there was this....creature? person? pincusion?

He (I'm pretty sure it's a he, nature would not be that cruel to a girl) seems to be...well, we're handcuffed, together.

I hope this is just someone's idea of a practical joke...thankfully, he doesn't appear to have woken up yet.

...

Get him off me..!!

Very fortunate that that remarkable lady came to help in my hour of need. The Virginian hasn't leaked so much as a thimbleful these last few days. With any luck, she'll sustain the rough waters for a few more creeping years.

It's rather strange, I must admit, to walk along the decks and not hear anything but the echo of my own footsteps. I don't think she's ever been so empty since the day she was completed. And even when most of the passengers had left, you still had the boilers churning and the odd crewman wandering by. [chuckles] Certainly gives you time enough to ponder your thoughts.

Quiet is all well and good in it's own right, but once in a while it's rather deppression. Which makes me all the more grateful for Cedrics visits, charming boy.

Hrmn. Perhaps I'll take the time to finally transcribe some of my music.

First, thank you Ma'am, for your mysterious but impressive repair job on the hole in my ship. It doesn't appear to be leaking anymore, and I'd be very much upset if I either had to deal with water damage to my second piano, or if I'd had to somehow push it up a level out of danger. And pianos are not exactly light..

Secondly..there seems to be some sort of a party going on in that City. All the lights have shorted out, but every once in a while I catch a glimpse of bright green. It's dark on the Virginian as well, which I don't quite understand. How can a power outage to a city reach my poor vessel on the water? But that seems to be the least of the mysteries about this place.

I've lit a few candles and the stars are coming out, so light streams in onto the keyboard. I can hear the music coming from the square, and while very different from what I play, it's quite inspiring. I'll have a lot to keep me occupied in the coming weeks..

It's been slightly under a week, and here I am still overlooking the most remarkable City from the ship. That in itself is miraculous, the longest I've stayed at either port was three days at the most. It's curious to be overlooking land for so long a time, but infinitely more interesting than rocking on the ocean for the rest of my lifetime.

Slightly more worrisome, however, is the noticible leak in the hull of the ship. It's a very tiny leak, only takes on about a bucketful of seawater an hour, but buckets add up. And I don't have the necessary tools nor the knowledge to repair the leak without blowing up the whole ship. [laughs]

I'm content enough with the thought of very very slowly drowning (I imagine it will take weeks to even fill up the one boiler room), but the idea that my beloved piano in the third deck might suffer damage is extremely disconcerning..

Is there some sort of metalsmith I can contact to hopefully solve my little problem? Otherwise, I might have to resort to spit and prayer, and I'm not one for either.

So this place is called the City. [smiles] Nice place. Of what I can see of it.

Cedric has proved an invaluable source of helpful information. Cedric, I thank you for striking up a conversation with this salty old sailor. [laughs]

Beautiful day, looks like. I think I could get used to this change of scenery.

[standing on the deck of the cruiseship SS Virginian, looking out at the City with a curious glint in his eye]

Well, that certainly can't be right. Either the captain must have fallen asleep at the wheel, or we're terribly lost. And since there is neither hide nor hair of the captain or anyone for that matter, I suspect it must be the second option.

It does look an active little place. I wonder if they're fond of music there: Jazz, or ragtime, or the errant piece by Chopin. Or maybe they have a different sort of music style altogether in this place.

This place...Does it have a name? Found on any map, anywhere? Hopefully one of the natives might step aboard and tell me at least what continent this is.

And I do hope Max is getting on all right..
